Exit very slow when currently open file is on network drive

Postby ChrisJenkins » Sat Nov 21, 2009 1:06 pm

I store my Personal Accountz files (and lots of other 'important' files) on a network share on a Windows 2003 server. This is because the server is backed up daily both locally and remotely thereby protecting my critical data, photos, music library etc. etc.

The network share is mounted on my PC as a network drive, N:. Opening and saving files to this location from inside Personal Accountz is a little slower than if the files are on a local drive (2-3 seconds versus 1-2 seconds), which is not important but when I exit Personal Accountz it takes around 20 seconds to exit (even if I have just saved the file so it does not need to prompt me about that). During part of that time the Window title bar shows 'Not Responding' though of course it then recovers and exits normally. If I open a file located on a local disk then the exit from Personal Accountz is virtually instantaneous.

This behaviour is unique to PAZ. No other application I use has performance issues with files on network drives (the LAN is GigaBit and the server is plenty powerful). The issue is not specific to this PC as I have installed PAZ on two other PCs to investigate and the same behaviour shows there too. I think the issue must be with some operation(s) PAZ does on exit.

This is not really that big a deal but is is somewhat annoying. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

Could you please try running Paz from the "command line" i.e. open the Windows console with
Start->Run->cmd.exe

and then run Paz with
C:\Program Files\Personal Accountz\PersonalAccountz.exe

and see if any "assertions" are reported when you exit Paz?

Hi Rob,

I tried this. No messages appeared inthe console window when I exited. I did note that when I ran Personal Accountz.exe it returned to the command prompt almost immediately (even before the program had started) almost like it had created a background process to run the actual program. Is that expected behaviour? It seemed to run okay (apart from the slow exit of course).

Hi Rob,

I used Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... 96645.aspx) to see what PAZ is doing when it exits. It seemsto perform a huge number (1000s) of identical O/S calls. Many of these are against the data file and these seem to be much slower when that is a remote file (i.e. on a network drive). I'm wonderign why it does so many of these seemingly redundant/duplicate calls. If you like I can send you the trace.

Someone will look into this, Monday - and if you don't mind, would you please email the trace to:

Hi Rob,

I mailed you the trace file on Sunday 30th. Did you receive it?

Thanks, Chris

Yes, thank you.

I wonder if this is a Windows 7 thing? It seems OK on an intel-Mac (to Windows XP share) and from Ubuntu (9.04 and 9.10) to Windows XP share.

At present I don't have a Windows 7 box to test it with.

It does seem related to Windows Vista/7. I see the same behaviour with Vista (32 and 64 bit) and Windows 7 (64 bit) to an XP share but XP to XP share is nowhere near so slow.

But having said that, I don't see any performance problems related to network shares from any other applications I use...

I came onto to the forum to ask about this same problem, I have recently started using WIN7 and I immediately noticed slow opening and closing of PAZ. I still have the program on my old XP box and out of interest I have ran it on that with the same network file and get no issues at all.

I also note that the keyboard response is slow in PAZ on WIN7, it is the only programme that I have moved over to WIN7 so far that is showing this slow response so it looks as though PAZ is not as WIN7 compatiable as it could be, (yet).

Could you keep me informed of developments?

Cheers

I am also finding Accountz to be very slow. I currently run Windows 7 64 bit OS with Intel Quad core 2.34 processor and 8G memory.
My Accountz file size is 452kb. It takes on average 1min 40sec to load the Accountz program; also, moving accounts to other groups - 1m 15s, merging accounts - 1m.
I have migrated from MS Money, subsequently I have a lot of accounts to re organise and it's taking me forever. I noticed other users have problems with Windows 7 OS. Is this typical?

tick this:-
Code: Select all
Preferences->Accounts->Actions->"postpone accounts recalculations"

to avoid the 1m 15secs when moving accounts in Accounts.

Also, if you want budget-for-lifetime-of-the-file then ensure this:
Code: Select all
Preferences->Accounts->Budget->Period

is set to <blank> (rather than to e.g. "12").

Finally, check all your accounts in Accounts to ensure than all of them have names and than non have <unnamed> account instead of a name (this happens sometimes after importing MS Money or Quicken data)
