'Cleared' field not RESET when transaction copied

If you have some burning need for a specific feature, give it an airing here :)

'Cleared' field not RESET when transaction copied

Postby MikeC » Sun Jul 18, 2010 7:32 am

When a transaction is copied the 'Cleared' field of the new transaction is not reset.

This is an annoyance when copying a bank or credit card transaction that has been cleared, particularly as one usually has 'Cleared' fields displayed only when viewing accounts.
Copying a transaction is supposed to save effort, so it should not be necessary to go to the account display to reset the 'Cleared' field! It can also be forgotten, so can cause some confusion when an account is reconciled at a later date.

The reason is that it is a copy command, so it copies everything. You are after a copy command that also is definable, something that can be done, but that no one has asked for yet. I have added it as a research issue for the dev team. It has task ID#1510 for your information.

Okay. If it is going to the dev team I would like to add further comments for consideration:

I don't think I am looking for a copy command that is definable. Not everything is being copied anyway as the new transaction is correctly given the current date as a default, so it would be sensible to ensure the 'Cleared' field is reset . I cannot think of any instances where I would want the 'Cleared' field left the same as the original transaction. How could a new transaction possibly be cleared! I therefore regard the fact that the 'Cleared' field is not being reset as a bug.

After using the copy command it is usually much later that reconciliation occurs. I have in the past wondered why during reconciliation a transaction is shown as cleared, and thought it was my fault. This could explain why nobody has reported this in the past - or maybe I'm just being too fussy!

Yes I fully agree with you. My guess is that very few use the copy command. The task is set so that the Cleared field respects the attributes of the accounts affected, so that if the account is tagged as 'Reconcilable' then it goes in as uncleared. That seems to me to be a sensible way to do this.

Thanks. Thats great. It must be dead simple to implement, so perhaps we can have it in the next release!
